Leo Hayes High School
Fredericton, NB
The newest high school in New Brunswick, Leo Hayes High School, was
built on the north side of Fredericton in 1998. A uniquely designed
school, the structural framing for the curved classroom section of the
school consists of a compositely designed steel beam floor system. This
system was used to minimize structural depth, to provide fire
protection, to minimize floor vibrations and to create a more aesthetic
appearance as the majority of the structure is exposed. The school
features a bi-level cafetorium and library/media center that also
utilized extensive exposed structural steel. The gymnasia were framed
with curved HSS roof trusses for a clean aesthetic appearance.
Notwithstanding the uniqueness of the framing, the structure was
tendered and constructed under budget and on schedule.
Eastern Designers was responsible for
complete structural engineering services including concepts,
preliminaries, and final design contract documents. Eastern Designers
also performed site inspections to confirm compliance with the project
drawings and specifications.
