Andover Bridge Rehabilitation
Perth-Andover, NB

Eastern Designers & Company Limited performed value engineering, preliminary and final designs for the $5M rehabilitation of the 291m long steel truss structure crossing the Saint John River at Perth-Andover, NB. The original structure was designed for H20-S16 truck loading. However, due to deterioration of members and increased thickness of asphalt over the years, the actual Gross Vehicle Weight capacity was reduced substantially. Technical challenges included determining how to upgrade the capacity of the bridge to CS600 truck loading and increasing the height of the structure while maintaining traffic flow across this critical crossing of the Saint John River. The rehabilitation included replacement of the deck, replacement of approximately 100 rusted stringers, upgrading of the existing stringer and floor beam capacities by welding nelson studs, jacking up the structure to mitigate ice damage, upgrading the jacking girders, construction of new bearing pedestals and replacement of bearings.
